As we enter peak mosquito season, the City of Mandurah is working with the Peel Mosquito Management Group (PMMG), completing the largest aerial treatments even undertaken in the region, covering 573 hectares, using 2 helicopters.
Throughout winter mosquito surveillance and aerial treatment continued and high tides led to the need for extensive treatment.
The environmental conditions also influence prevalence of Ross River virus, Barmah Forest Viruses and is not necessarily linked to mosquito numbers.
The community of Mandurah was urged to stay vigilant about personal mosquito protection.
Protective measures should include,
- Use of insect repellent
- Covering up with loose, long clothing and avoiding dark colours
- Protecting infants and children with suitable clothing, bed nets and screens
- Avoid outdoor exposure particularly at dawn and dusk.
- Ensure screen doors are properly secured.
